Ameren offers incentives for companies to install electric vehicle chargers

Ameren Missouri is providing money to companies to install electric vehicle chargers at a reduced cost.

As electric vehicles become more prevalent across the country, the demand for public charging stations is increasing. Ameren’s Charge Ahead program has already provided $ 1 million in incentives to help businesses and public facilities make electric vehicle charging more widely available to drivers, and $ 5 million is still available.

Few Mid-Missouri companies have applied for the program, according to a press release from Ameren.

The funds available – which will expire at the end of 2022 – can help businesses install 1,000 charging stations in 350 locations across the state. Companies can recoup up to 50% of the total project cost, or $ 5,000 per Tier 2 port and $ 20,000 per Tier 3 port. Before the incentives, most shippers cost around $ 7,000. Thanks to Charge Ahead, they are $ 3,500.

More than 50 models of electric vehicles are available today and nearly 140 models are expected by 2024. Falling battery costs are expected to lower the price of electric vehicles to equal that of gasoline cars by 2023. As costs and barriers decrease, electric vehicle adoption is expected to reach about 18.7 million in the United States by 2030, according to the press release.

Reducing carbon emissions is important to Ameren as it strives to meet its goal of net zero emissions by 2050, said Patrick Smith, vice president of economic, community and business development at Ameren Missouri, in a press release.

“By partnering with local businesses, apartment complexes and public amenities to offer incentives for electric vehicle charging, we are making it easier for our region to adopt electric vehicles while giving businesses an attractive advantage. for customers and employees, ”he said.

Installing electric vehicle chargers can be beneficial for businesses, as electric vehicle drivers tend to plan their trips based on access to charging. Homeowners can set their own price per kilowatt hour or offer it free as an incentive to attract customers.

Ameren Missouri has been providing electricity and gas services for over 100 years. Its mission is “to fuel the quality of life of its 1.2 million electricity customers and 132,000 natural gas customers in central and eastern Missouri.” The company’s service area covers 64 counties and more than 500 communities, according to the press release.
