Banh mi take-out restaurant opens bakery in Pineville, NC Tue, 26 Jul 2022 10:00:00 +0000

Lula's grilled pork banh mi.

Lula’s grilled pork banh mi.

Banh mi on homemade Vietnamese baguette. Hot and crispy chicken wings and spring rolls. Is there anything better? Now there’s a new takeout outlet in Pineville called Lula Bahn Mi & Bakery, where you can get all of that – plus dessert.

You’ll find the restaurant in the Centrum Mall across from the Carolina Place Mall – the same area where the international grocery store and Super G Mart food hall are slated to open soon.

It’s a family affair. Owner Kacie Nguyen and her husband, Tony, opened the store in mid-July. The Fort Mill School District tech specialist and former network engineer named the store Lula after a combination of their mothers’ names, Luu and Lan.

“We wanted to pay tribute to the two women whose love and talent in the kitchen inspired us. They taught us that food is about connection, tradition and memories. We love that our food brings families together and brings back fond memories of childhood and home for so many,” said Kacie Nguyen.

The Nguyens’ school-aged sons, Peyton and Cohen, also participate — as do their niece and nephew — taking orders at the counter and chatting with customers who are packing the space.

FOOD: Lula serves Vietnamese dishes such as banh mi, curry, and noodle bowls, as well as small-batch desserts including cheesecakes, cupcakes, cookies, and macaroons. Breakfast is also available, with standard American choices like bacon or ham, egg and cheese croissants, and Vietnamese options such as hot pate, a savory flaky bun stuffed with meat.

“Everything that goes into our banh mi is homemade, including the Vietnamese baguette; I don’t know of any other banh mi store that does this in our area,” Nguyen said.

Lula’s desserts include cupcakes, individual cheesecakes and macaroons. Candice Buchanan

WHAT TO TRY: Roasted pork belly banh mi pairs the savory meat with fresh cucumber, pickled daikon and carrot, and a healthy layer of cilantro for crunch. Or savor the lightly breaded chicken wings with fried rice, a comforting pairing that’s exactly what you’d expect. Don’t forget the spring rolls.

THE SPACE: There are no seats yet, but a few tables are on the way. For now, plan for take-out. (And if you can’t wait to get home, you can always park under the shady trees in the mall and eat — like I did.)

THE ATMOSPHERE: The restaurant is bright and cheerful, decorated with a mural by New York artist Steffi Lynn Tsai. (You can also buy her gift cards while you wait for your order.)

Nguyen added, “We want to say thank you to everyone who showed up at the store! Thank you for your patronage, social media posts, likes, shares, reviews, gifts, and patience! It’s so wonderful to finally be able to share our food and our space with our community.

A bright and inviting mural by New York artist Steffi Lynn Tsai sets the tone for the space. Heidi Finley CharlotteFive

Drink choices include fountain sodas, sweet tea, and fruit-flavored green teas. Heidi Finley CharlotteFive

HOW TO ORDER: Order online via ToastTab for pickup, or walk in and place an order in person.

Where to Sell Your Product Online and Build a 6 Figure Business Fri, 22 Jul 2022 10:03:24 +0000

Hans Schrei and Luis Gramajo are the founders of Wunderkeks, a biscuit brand.

Whether you’re starting your business or ready to expand your business, listing your products online is an essential part of reaching customers where they spend their time.

The founders of Wunderkeks started selling their cookies at farmers’ markets, then found success on Shopify as more people shopped online during the pandemic.

“Everything was moving towards e-commerce,” said one of the founders, Hans Schrei. In 2021, the brand hit nearly $5 million in annual revenue, according to documents reviewed by Insider.

Ideal for : If your business needs reach, Amazon is the place for you. A survey by retail publication Pymnts suggested that Amazon hosted around 56% of all e-commerce sales in the United States in 2021.

Cost: The individual plan costs $1 per unit sold. The Professional plan, with more seller tools, costs $40 per month and most sales are subject to a 15% commission. Amazon offers additional services such as advertising and fulfillment for a fee.

Ideal for : Etsy is a low-cost platform if you’re just starting your business and aren’t ready to commit to a higher-volume sales channel. It’s also suitable for custom products, digital downloads, and handmade items that buyers are likely to be looking for.

Cost: Etsy charges $0.20 per product listing.

Ideal for : Use Shopify if you have a unique product that you want to sell directly to your customers and don’t want to build a website from scratch.

Cost: A basic plan, which includes website hosting, marketing tools, and app integrations, costs $29 per month. The next level with additional features is $79 per month and the advanced plan is $299 per month; you can get a 50% discount on either plan for the first year if you pay annually. High-volume businesses can subscribe to Shopify Plus for $2,000 per month.

There are no transaction fees if you use Shopify’s payment processor, but if you use a third-party provider like Affirm or Afterpay, there are 2%, 1%, or 0.5% fees depending of your plan.

Save money on back-to-school supplies Tue, 19 Jul 2022 23:00:00 +0000

The consumer price index has increased by more than 9% over the past year. This is a large measure of goods and services which means going back to school will likely cost you more too. However, ABC15’s Katie Raml found ways to save while checking out the full shelves for the school rush.

The past two years have been unusual with so many schools offering virtual classes. Thus, the collected supplies were much lower than normal. Now that most students are heading back to class, teachers desperately need to stock their closets with supplies.

Consumer expert Julie Ramhold of says parents can still save — even by buying more supplies at higher prices — by buy wholesale and share order with other parents. There are also the benefits of cashback apps.

“If you’re looking to save money, in general, check out cash-back apps. Things like Rakuten are really great for shopping in-store and online. And, that might not seem like much, but if you’re buying a lot, that cash back can really add up over time,” Ramhold said.

Raml scoured the aisles of a Walmart on Bell Road in Phoenix with their store manager to find deals and discounts parents can get right now.

Walmart offers several “rollbacks” offers you should take advantage of during your shopping trips. They said about 100 items cost less than $1 and many start at a quarter.

They even have something called a “loss leader” – something that brings you into the store with the expectation that you’re shopping for other things, but the business takes a loss on those items.

One of the coolest things about Walmart is bringing school listings right to your phone.

Other ways to save:

  • Check the online store offers: Staples offers discounts and other offers for rewards members
  • Target offers teachers and students special discounts, including 15-20% off a one-time purchase
  • To research school supply stores who can offer lower prices on items and full order discounts
Beware of ticket offers that are too good to be true Sun, 17 Jul 2022 09:40:05 +0000

Summer is heating up and so is demand for tickets to major concerts, festivals and events, especially with COVID-19 restrictions easing in many places.

But if this hot post sounds too good to be true, chances are it is. Consumers across the United States reported buying tickets for events that did not take place.

Scammers trick festival-goers into buying event tickets, promising unlimited food, live music and more, usually via a social media link. The social media link takes festival-goers to a website to purchase tickets. In reality, the event and the tickets are not real, leaving lots of hundreds of dollars and a great summer experience.

As with any shopping experience, be sure to stay alert to who your money is being sent to and where it is going. Be careful and do your homework when buying these tickets, especially online.

When looking for summer festival tickets, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) offers these tips:

• Do your research. Research the name of the festival online and make sure it matches the name advertised on its website. Some will change their names to hide bad backgrounds. BBB offers BBB business profiles on millions of businesses. Research the ticket seller to ensure you are dealing with a reputable seller before purchasing tickets.

• Check the supplier’s website if they have one. Look for a website with the padlock on the page and “https” in the URL web address box. Also look for trustmarks on websites such as your BBB seal.

• Find the festival or supplier contact information on the festival website in case you need to email or call later.

• Be sure to check the refund and exchange policies of the festival or supplier. Always keep your receipts.

• Be careful when buying tickets sold on Craigslist and other free online ads.

• Beware of offers that are too good to be true. Don’t be forced to buy locally. Make comparisons before making a purchase decision.

• Pay by credit card. If there’s a problem, you may be able to dispute the charge with your credit card company. Never wire money to a stranger.
