Lidl USA, the Division of the German Schwarz group based in Arlington, Virginia, headed for the nation’s capital.
The grocer will open its new store at 2224 Town Center Drive SE in Washington DC on September 28. Located in Skyland Town Center in southeast DC, the Lidl location will be the first full-service grocery store to open in Wards 7 and 8 in more than a decade, the grocer said.
“We are ready – and the community is ready – to welcome Lidl to Ward 7,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a statement. “This grocery store has been a long time coming and it will help us make Skyland a true downtown. Welcome to DC, Lidl.
The new store will not only bring an indispensable resource for all who live in the neighborhood, but also employment opportunities, Lidl said in a statement.
In Washington DC, the store will create more than 60 new jobs in the Wards 7 and 8with a starting salary for all associates at $16.50 per hour, which includes comprehensive benefits, Lidl said. The retail grocery store provides health care for all full-time and part-time positions.
The inauguration of the new Lidl is scheduled for Tuesday at 4 p.m. and there will also be a soft opening of the store from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. that day.
Lidl US, which is experiencing major growth, opened two new sites in August. The first location is at 11991 Reisterstown Road. in Reisterstown, Maryland, and the second location opened in the Mayfair Mall at 210 East Jericho Turnpike in Commack, New York.
In April Lidl innovated with local officials at the site of its future Deer Park, New York store, the grocer’s largest and first construction on Long Island.
The new $15 million store, which will be the grocer’s 22nd store on Long Island, will be 35,359 square feet. The Deer Park location will be a state-of-the-art store opening in early 2023, the grocer said in a statement.
