A new Big 5 Sporting Goods location is coming to Mesquite next month. And the company is now hiring for part-time and full-time positions to staff the new store.
A special hiring event will be held next week on September 12-13 at the Mesquite Works office located at 312 W. Mesquite Blvd. Suites 115 and 117, in the Mesquite Plaza Mall. The hiring event will run from 9 a.m. to noon and then from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. both days.
Big 5 is a national full-line sporting goods retailer with 431 stores in eleven states across the country. The company has been in business since 1955.
The Mesquite location will be located at 1085 W. Pioneer Blvd in Mesquite, in the former Dollar Tree location directly across from Walmart.
The store is scheduled to have a soft opening for the public on October 13. Employees would show up for work on September 26 to start getting everything ready for the opening. A grand opening event is also in preparation, the date of which will be announced later.
In an interview with The Progress, Big 5 District Supervisor Joe Stevenson said the company has been considering a possible entry into the Mesquite community for some time now.
“We looked at Mesquite probably 8 to 10 years ago,” Stevenson said. “Then the recession came and the growth kind of stopped us for a while. But we’re still looking for markets of a certain size and demographics. We think Mesquite will be a perfect location for a successful store. .
Big 5 is also located in other small town Nevada markets, including stores in Pahrump, Fallon, and Mendon.
The stores offer designer shoes and clothing, something hard to find in Mesquite.
But the company really specializes in equipment for major team sports.
“Our focus is really on providing team sports,” Stevenson said. “So we are very big in football, baseball, soccer and more. In Mesquite, you don’t really have the same type of shopping opportunity yet. So we’re happy to bring it.
Plus, Big 5 offers a full line of outdoor gear. This includes long guns, ammo, camping gear, fishing supplies and more.
“We sell just about anything you would need to have fun outdoors,” Stevenson said.
As an employer, Big 5 offers its staff several incentives that make the company a great place to work. These include flexible hours, product training, merchandise discounts, and a positive work environment.
The company is looking to hire up to 30 people to manage the new Mesquite store. These are full-time and part-time positions. Applicants for a part-time position must be at least 18 years old. Applicants for full-time positions must be 21 years of age and have a high school diploma.
Candidates are recommended to complete a job application prior to next week’s event at big5.com/careers. So come to the event for a live interview.
