UP Experts Show How to Save Money for Holiday Shopping

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) — It’s 52 days until Christmas and many are planning their holiday shopping.

In the midst of a sluggish economy and inflation. Marquette Downtown Development Authority Director of Promotions Mike Bradford said local shopping is important to the community.

“Shopping at your local stores, whose owners you know, [those] are also people who live in the community. So keeping that money in the community does a pretty good job of getting it through,” Bradford said.

Some regions are proactive with vacation savings. The Ishpeming and Negaunee Chamber of Commerce creates a new savings publication for local businesses. Samantha Lajeunesse, marketing coordinator for the Greater Ishpeming Negaunee Area Chamber of Commerce (GINCC), said it was exciting to do something like this.

“In the coming weeks, be sure to follow us at the Greater Ishpeming Negaunee Area Chamber of Commerce on Facebook. I will regularly post messages showing some companies that are already participating and I will try to add other companies,” said Lajeunesse.

As people go out and try to save, Embers Credit Union has some tips people can use for the holidays. Deputy Director Jennie Adams said to start now.

“When shopping, whether locally or online, be sure to keep those receipts. Check your prices, make sure they match because there is room for error,” Adams said.

Over the next few weeks, Adams said to stay on top of your spending.

“When shopping, whether locally or online, be sure to keep those receipts. Check your prices, make sure they match because there is room for error,” Adams said.

The GINCC expects the full savings publication to be ready by the end of this month. The Marquette DDA will host its Ladies Night on November 17th and Small Business Saturday on November 26th.
